Descriptions:
A Mexican woman accused of killing her daughter-in-law in a high-profile case has been arrested after allegedly fleeing abroad.
Authorities confirmed that Erika Maria Herrera, 63, was taken into custody in Venezuela following a manhunt that lasted several weeks. She is suspected of being responsible for the death of Carolina Flores, a 27-year-old former beauty titleholder.
An international alert had been issued through Interpol after investigators identified Herrera as the main suspect in the shooting, which occurred at the victim’s residence in Mexico City on April 15.
Flores, who previously held a Miss Teen title in Baja California, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds inside the apartment she shared with her husband and their infant child.
Authorities allege that surveillance footage captured the moment Herrera confronted Flores before shots were fired. According to reports, the suspect was later heard making statements suggesting anger and personal conflict as a motive.
Flores’ husband, Alejandro Herrera, is also under investigation after allegedly delaying reporting the incident, which may have allowed the suspect time to leave the country.
Mexican officials stated that Herrera remains in custody in Venezuela and is expected to undergo extradition proceedings to face charges in Mexico.
In a statement, prosecutors confirmed that evidence collected shortly after the incident led to a court-issued arrest warrant. Authorities described the case as a femicide and emphasized coordination between international law enforcement agencies in securing the arrest.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to examine all aspects of the case.
