A Scottish woman, Nicole Blain, has been found guilty of killing her newborn daughter after attempting to blame another child for the incident.

The verdict was delivered at the High Court of Glasgow following a trial into the death of 19-day-old Thea Wilson.

The baby died in July 2023 after suffering severe injuries at Blain’s home in Scotland. Medical evidence presented during the trial revealed that the infant had sustained multiple skull fractures, brain trauma, broken ribs, and internal bleeding.

Blain told the court that she had been asleep while her daughter was in a crib and woke to find her on the floor. She suggested the injuries may have been caused accidentally by another child staying in the home.

However, prosecutors rejected this explanation, presenting expert testimony that indicated the injuries were the result of significant force. Pathologist Leighanne Deboys stated that the trauma was consistent with violent shaking and blunt force, similar to injuries seen in serious car accidents.

Jurors also heard that Blain had been dealing with postnatal depression and had been visited by a social worker earlier on the day of the incident.

During the trial, the child’s grandfather, Alan Wilson, described receiving a distressing phone call in which he heard loud screaming in the background. He initially believed it was another child but later realized it was the infant.

He told the court that Blain appeared distressed and unsure of what to do, prompting him to advise her to call emergency services.

A support worker who later arrived at the property found the baby unresponsive and immediately contacted emergency responders. The child was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children, where she later died from her injuries.

During proceedings, footage from a gender reveal event was also referenced, showing Blain displaying aggressive behavior while holding a knife, though she maintained throughout the trial that she would never intentionally harm her child.

Despite her claims, the jury found her guilty of murder.

Presiding judge Lord Scott described the case as rare but serious, confirming that Blain would receive a life sentence. The final length of her minimum term is expected to be decided at a later hearing.

Blain reportedly became emotional after the verdict and was taken into custody.

Police representative Laura Young stated that the case was a tragic loss of life and confirmed that Blain would now face the legal consequences of her actions.

Sentencing is scheduled to take place next month.
