US President Donald Trump has suggested that a temporary cease-fire in Ukraine could be possible after a recent conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump described the discussion as positive, noting that both Ukraine and Iran were key topics. He indicated that a cease-fire could potentially be announced around Victory Day, which commemorates the end of World War II in Europe.

Trump said he raised the idea of a temporary halt in fighting and believes Putin may consider it. He added that such a step could help move toward a longer-term resolution to the ongoing conflict.

The war in Ukraine has lasted more than four years since Russia’s invasion, making it one of the most significant conflicts in Europe in recent decades.

Efforts by the US administration to broker peace have been ongoing, although progress slowed amid tensions in the Middle East. A recent pause in fighting there has allowed diplomatic discussions regarding Ukraine to resume.

Despite the optimism, uncertainty remains over whether Russia will commit to a sustained cease-fire. Previous attempts have been short-lived and not always coordinated with Ukrainian authorities.

In addition to Ukraine, the leaders also discussed Iran. Trump revealed that Putin suggested Russia could assist with securing enriched uranium linked to Iran’s nuclear program, but he declined the proposal, emphasizing that ending the war in Ukraine remains the priority.

Observers remain cautious as no formal agreement has been confirmed, and further developments are expected in the coming weeks.
