Lagos Man Accuses OPay User of Withholding ₦100,000 Sent in Error, Claims He Was Blocked
A Lagos technician alleges an OPay customer refused to refund ₦100,000 mistakenly transferred to her account and blocked him after repeated requests.
A Lagos-based technician has accused an OPay customer of refusing to return ₦100,000 mistakenly transferred into her account, sparking fresh concerns over the risks of digital banking errors in Nigeria.
The complainant, Ani Gerald Chukwuebuka, explained that the incident occurred after a friend attempted to repay him but mistakenly sent the money to the wrong account due to a minor error.
💸 How the Mistake Happened
According to Chukwuebuka, the issue began when his friend tried to transfer ₦100,000 back to him via mobile banking. Both account numbers were nearly identical, with only the last digit differing.
“At the time, we were together. He handed me his phone to input my account details, but I forgot to confirm the account name before he completed the transaction,” he said.
The transfer was processed instantly, but hours later, Chukwuebuka realized he had not received any credit alert.
😳 Discovery and Contact Attempts
After checking his account balance and confirming the money was missing, he traced the transaction and discovered it had been sent to another OPay user.
He immediately reached out to the recipient, identified as Opeyemi Faridat Awodoyin, but claims the responses he received were inconsistent.
“At first, she denied receiving the money. Later, she admitted it entered her account, then changed her story again, claiming OPay had taken the funds because she owed them,” he alleged.
📱 Alleged Agreement Turns Sour
Chukwuebuka further revealed that the recipient initially agreed to refund the money in instalments through WhatsApp messages. However, communication reportedly broke down shortly after.
“The next day, when I reminded her about the refund, she blocked me immediately,” he said.
He added that despite repeated efforts and pleas, the recipient allegedly refused to return the money.
⚠️ Growing Concerns Over Digital Transfers
This incident highlights a growing issue in Nigeria’s fast-expanding digital payment space, where simple errors in account numbers can lead to significant financial losses.
With platforms like OPay enabling instant transfers, recovering funds often depends entirely on the cooperation of the recipient.
🛑 What Users Should Learn
Cases like this serve as a reminder of the importance of verifying transaction details before sending money. Users are advised to:
– Always confirm the recipient’s name before completing transfers
– Double-check account numbers carefully
– Act immediately if a mistake occurs
– Report issues promptly to the payment provider
📌 Final Thoughts
As digital banking continues to grow, incidents like this raise important questions about accountability and consumer protection. While technology has made transactions faster and easier, it has also increased the risks associated with human error.
Until stronger safeguards are in place, users must remain vigilant—because a single wrong digit can result in a costly mistake.
