An Illinois man is in custody after authorities say he was involved in the killing of his ex-girlfriend in a disturbing domestic violence case that has shocked the Schaumburg community.

Kevin Motykie has been charged following the death of 43-year-old nurse Katherine Torbick, who was discovered dead in her home on April 30 after a friend requested a welfare check when she could not be reached.

According to police reports and local media, officers arrived at the residence and found Torbick unresponsive on a couch with visible signs of trauma. Motykie was later located in the garage and taken into custody.

Authorities stated that he was in a heavily impaired state at the time of arrest after allegedly consuming prescription medications.

Investigators revealed that Motykie had previously been wanted in connection with a prior alleged domestic violence incident involving Torbick weeks earlier. Following that earlier incident, the victim had reportedly sought help from neighbors and authorities, expressing fear for her safety.

Court documents indicate that evidence collected during the investigation included a digital recording device allegedly in Motykie’s possession. Prosecutors claim the recording contained hours of disturbing audio linked to the final moments leading up to the victim’s death.

Officials allege that the recording captured a prolonged violent assault and coercive behavior during an extended confrontation inside the home.

Authorities further stated that Torbick had previously documented her fear of Motykie in statements made to law enforcement, including a recorded message in which she expressed concern that she might be killed.

Despite earlier reports and protective concerns raised after prior incidents, Motykie was not taken into custody before the fatal encounter.

Local outlets report that Torbick had previously been employed as a nurse for more than two decades and was well regarded by colleagues and patients. Her employer released a statement describing her as a valued team member whose loss has devastated her workplace community.

Katherine Torbick had reportedly been in an on-and-off relationship with Motykie for several years prior to the incident.

Authorities also noted that the investigation is ongoing and additional forensic analysis is expected to play a role in the prosecution.

Motykie has been formally charged with murder and multiple counts related to domestic violence and sexual assault. He remains in custody pending his next court appearance scheduled for May 23.

Law enforcement officials have emphasized that the case highlights ongoing concerns surrounding repeat domestic violence offenders and the importance of intervention when early warning signs emerge.

The Schaumburg Police Department and prosecutors continue to review evidence as the case moves forward in court.
